How it works

Unayo brings various financial solutions to your fingertips, uniquely designed to add value to your day-to-day transactional needs. Unayo offers various solutions that are centred around your needs and creating value for you.

Once registered, you will create a profile that will allow you to have access to a variety of accounts to choose from. The 4 accounts differ based on the required information and KYC documents and include:

Personal Accounts:
- Lite Account
- Pro Account

Business Accounts:
- Merchant Account
- Donor Account

  • Lite account bundle (personal account)

    A Lite Account is given to customers (Botswana citizens) who sign up using either the USSD (*200#) or Smart App channels. These customers provide limited KYC information and will receive limited functionality. You can register for the Lite Account using your identity document and address details only.



  • A Pro Account is given to customers (Botswana citizens and foreign nationals) who either upgraded from a Lite Account or have undergone a full KYC process. These customers receive additional functionality on their account, including increased transactional and account limits. Pro Account holders can apply to act as micro/individual-merchants or agents and will be required to submit additional KYC information.

    KYC Documents Required (Personal Account)
    Conveniently register for an Unayo personal account by simply taking a picture or uploading existing images of the below documents.

    1. Proof of Identity: Omang (ID) /Passport
    2. Selfie picture and video
    3. Proof of Residence : Utility Bill, Kgotla Affidavit, Commissioner of Oaths
    4. Source of funds: Input your source of funds and amount



  • A Merchant Account can be applied for by customers who have undergone the full KYC process. These customers can either register for a Merchant Account in the case of a small General Dealer shop or small supermarket. Alternatively, they could register for a Super Merchant Account in the case of a larger retail store/supermarkets. The customer is required to provide details of their business, including their trading location. These customers can also opt to become searchable on the Unayo App and act as a point of presence for Stanbic Bank. They earn a commission for facilitating customer transactions, including cash-in and cash-out.



  • A Donor Account can be applied for by customers who hold a Business Account. The customer is required to provide details of their business, including their trading details. These customers can perform bulk fund disbursements and pay wages to designated recipients.

  • Can anyone use Unayo?

    Yes, Unayo is inclusive and accessible to everyone, even if you do not have a bank account or Stanbic Bank account. Unayo is accessible through self-registration via USSD (*200#) or through mobile phone by downloading the Unayo App.



  • Absolutely. You can sign up for a personal or business account in minutes and start transacting within seconds. Start your Unayo journey through self-registration via USSD (*200#) or through mobile phone by downloading the Unayo App for iOS or Android. Unayo registration is simple, easy and convenient. You can register from the comfort of your home, office and anywhere you are. Once registered, you will create a profile that will allow you to have access to a variety of accounts to choose from.



  • The 4 account options differ based on whether for Personal (Lite Account or Pro Account ) or Business (Merchant Account or Donor Account ) as well as the required information and KYC documents. Read more about each account here to see what Is most relevant for you.



  • Absolutely. You can share your Unayo account with trusted friends and family who will be able to perform transactions on your account. Simply do this by adding them as a member on your profile. Notifications on your account activity will be shared with you as transactions are processed.



  • A cash out transaction allows you to exchange e-value for physical cash at a merchant. You create a digital voucher for the value you wish to receive. The merchant hands you physical cash in exchange for the same value of digital funds from your account. This process is similar to withdrawing funds from an ATM or via a bank teller.



  • A cash in transaction allows you to exchange physical cash for e-value at a merchant. You hand the merchant physical cash and they transfer digital funds in the same value to your account. This process is similar to depositing funds at a bank branch.



  • To deposit cash, you create a "cash in" voucher in the amount that you want to deposit. When you present this to a merchant, they will be able to enter it into their device and accept your cash. Your account will be credited with the same amount of money as you handed the merchant.

    You can also transfer funds (EFT : Electronic Funds Transfer) from any local bank account to an Unayo Account



  • You can pay someone using any one of the different methods below:

    Scan to pay: This allows you to scan another customer's QR code and enter a payment amount.

    Send Money: This allows you to send money to a customer's email or mobile phone number which they can then redeem at a participating merchant.

    Payment Voucher: This allows you to generate a payment voucher that the recipient can redeem at a participating merchant.

    Bank Account: This allows you to enter the customer's account details (Unayo account or one at a different local bank) and make a payment to that account.



  • Unayo is accessible through all mobile networks in Botswana (Orange, Mascom, BTC).
